Most did not return to Germany. They died in prison camps in Russia. Out of the approx 110,000 taken prisoner only 6000 made it back to Germany. The higher the rank had the best chances. Following the defeat of German forces at the siege/battle of Stalingrad the German prisoners were force-marched into the interior of Russia to POW camps where many died from hunger , overwork and disease - only 5008 men of the Sixth Army ever returned home to Germany .

Actually, the Soviets captured 91,000 German soldiers and SS in the Battle of Stalingrad, and suffered some 150,000 killed. Although the Soviets lost some 500,000 soldiers and civilians, the fight at Stalingrad proved to the Russian people that the Germans could be beaten.

The biggest turning point of the war in the eastern area was the defeat of Germany in Stalingrad. The Nazis were defeated and thousands were captured. General Rommel however considered the war lost by the Germans when they were defeated in Africa and Germans were captured there.
