The Four Imperial Carriers that bombed Darwin in 1942 were the: Akagi, Soryu, Kaga, and Kiryu. The following are approximate figures: 1. Akagi-27 Kate torpedo bombers, 3 crewmen apiece; 18 Val dive bombers, 3 crewmen apiece; 18 Zero fighters, 1 pilot apiece. Total 153 Airmen. 2. Soryu-18 Kate torpedo bombers, 3 crewmen apiece; 18 Val dive bombers, 3 crewmen apiece; 18 Zero fighters, 1 pilot apiece. Total 126 Airmen. 3. Kaga-27 Kate torpedo bombers, 3 crewmen apiece; 27 Val dive bombers, 3 crewmen apiece; 18 Zero fighters, 1 pilot apiece. Total 180 Airmen. 4. Hiryu-18 Kate torpedo bombers, 3 crewmen apiece; 18 Val dive bombers, 3 crewmen apiece; 18 Zero fighters, 1 pilot apiece. Total 126 Airmen. Total NAVAL Airmen: 585 Aircrewmen Over 60 Japanese ARMY aircraft participated in the aerial raids: If the ARMY raiders were twin engine BETTY or NELL bombers; their aircrew complement was about 7 crewmen per bomber: Approximately 420 Aircrewmen, or more. Total Japanese Airman participating in the Darwin Raids: Over 1,000 Airmen.
