The conflict between Japan and China, particularly during the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945), resulted in an estimated 15 to 20 million Chinese deaths. This staggering number includes military personnel and civilians, many of whom suffered due to war atrocities, famine, and disease. The most notorious event was the Nanjing Massacre in 1937, where hundreds of thousands of Chinese were killed by Japanese troops. The total death toll reflects the widespread devastation and suffering caused by the conflict.
Nanjing (then spelled Nanking). The so-called "Rape of Nanking" (Nanjing Massacre) began on December 13, 1937, during the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945) which in 1941 became part of World War II. The casualties among Chinese civilians were in the hundreds of thousands as the Japanese occupied most of eastern China.
Certainly Japan could not have made a massive withdrawal of troops they had in China and Manchuria late in 1944. But they did have close to two million troops. At least 500,000 battle tested troops could have been sent eastward to defend Japanese held islands against the steady advance of the US's island hoping troops. They failed to do this, reasons are unknown.

400 million... China currently has a population of over 1.3 billion
Japan was attacking many of its neighbors. In 1905, it occupied Korea and Taiwan. In the early 1930's, it began a very nasty campaign in China. In 1937, the Japanese army faked an attack by Chinese troops in N.E. China - Manchuria (Mukden, Manchukuo) and further dominated China.
