Three men named John are found in the Gospels, two of which where gospel authors:

  • John (brother of James and son of Zebedee) was writer of Gospel of John.
  • John Mark was the writer of Gospel of Mark (Acts 12:25)
  • John the Baptist, son of Zechariah and Elizabeth (Mat 11:11, John 1)

Note that John Mark, writer of Mark gospel, does not appear in the Gospel writings themselves because he became a disciple after those events occurred. His story starts with his journey with Paul and Barnabas.
