the kb per message must be averaged because no two messages are the same size. If the kb consumption is based upon comparable sms sized messages (between 100 and 200 characters) without pictures or voice message, then the usage is probably less than 20kb's per message. But it is not a strict characters/data calculation, as bbm uses data for checking for updates and header information on each message. 1mb of data purchased should give hundreds of messages, and, if roaming, is a far cheaper solution than the charge per message of sms.
