OSS-The Office of Strategic Services
In September 1944, the Office of Strategic Service (OSS) established special operations at Watton, UK, involving the Joan-Eleanor (JE) project. This involved agents inside enemy territory using a special compact radio to communicate intelligence information to a circling de Havilland Mosquito aircraft. The device emitted a signal cone pattern skywards, minimizing ground detection by enemy intercept radio stations. OSS utilized the de Havilland Mosquito with OSS operator in the aft fuselage to communicate with the ground agent and operated A-26 Invaders to insert agents inside Germany. The 654 Squadron provided pilots and navigators to fly both Mosquito and A-26 aircraft. The 25th BG Rcn wished credit for flying OSS missions and labeled all OSS flights (Mosquito & A-26) Redstocking (one word in records) in mission and monthly activity reports. OSS never used the label Redstocking and the term does not appear in OSS JE files. After Eighth Air Force forced transfer of JE operations from Watton to Harrington under 492nd BG control, the label Redstocking ceases to appear in both bomb group records.
