No Marine Corps Officer received the Medal of Honor during the Boxer Rebellion.
A total of 38 Marines received the Medal of Honor for their service in China including by rank:
1-Gunnery Sergeant.
4-Sergeants.
4-Corporals.
28-Privates.
1-Drummer.
Daniel Joseph Daly, a legend in the Corps, received his first such medal there while serving as a Private, and his second in Haiti as a Gunnery Sergeant. He also held the Navy Cross, the Distinguished Service Cross, the Croix de guerre and the Medaille militarie. He is one of only 19 people to have received the Medal twice in their lifetimes.
Marine officers do not rate the Good Conduct Medal because they are not eligible for the award. The Good Conduct Medal is awarded to enlisted service members who demonstrate exemplary behavior, efficiency, and fidelity during a specified period of service. Officers are evaluated on their performance through other means, such as fitness reports and commendations.
The Scarlet Stripe, often called the Blood Stripe has been an official part of the uniform regulations for NCO's and Officers since 1859 and is said to commemorate the bloodshed by Marine officers and non-commissioned officers at the Battle of Chapultepec in Mexico in 1846. Therefore it is only worn by Corporals and above in the Marine Corps.
