The Puritans had no idea what number to believe there was. It just kept going up and up. It started at three. Then it went to 9. Then in the forties. Then into the hundreds.

We now know that there were no witches in Salem.

There is no exact, perfect number for this statistic, but there were somewhere between 150 and 200 people formally accused. There is no way to count the number of people who were accused and never arrested.
