∙ 11y agoThe major problem of relapse in the treatment of Alcoholism is the belief, taught in 12 step programs, in "loss of control." This is the theory that once an alcoholic has a drink (even a sip) of alcohol, the person suffers a loss of control over their behavior and will continue drinking.
Research has demonstrated that the more a person believes this idea, the more likely the person is to "lose control" after having a drink of alcohol. In other words, the false belief becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy.
