Of the approximately 520 species of mammals known in Brazil, more than 100 are primates that includes monkeys, the marmosets and capuchin monkeys. Over the past decade seven new monkey species were described, including the smallest known species of monkey, a marmoset of only 100 grams, smaller than the palm of an adult. How these animals live in very restricted areas, defined for example by the presence of rivers or in areas without forest, it is very likely that the number of species is much greater, since many of these areas may not have been explored. For example, the White Uacari, a large monkey, is restricted to the region of Mamirauá in the upper Amazon basin, bordered by the rivers that surround the area. The golden lion tamarin is restricted to small areas of the Atlantic.

Other mammal groups well represented in the Brazilian fauna are marsupials, with more than 30 species, and bats, with over 140 species.

Most Brazilian mammals occurs in the Amazon region. However, also at sea mammal fauna is well represented, with about 35 species of dolphins and whales, nearly half the known species in the world, occurring in Brazilian waters. Other aquatic mammals are abundant, the button color pink, and dolphin-tucuxi, important predators of the Amazon rivers. Also in the waters are two of the most endangered mammals today, otter and manatee.

Bird diversity is also very significant. Only with macaws, parrots and include over 70 species, among them the ararajuba, national symbol, and blue macaw, virtually extinct. Besides the eagle, the world's largest eagle, which occurs in the Amazon region.
