In an octave there are eight white notes, C D E F G A B C. For the black notes there are 6, if you are going from C sharp to C sharp again. Hope this helps. Five black keys per octave is probably a better way to think about it.

Hom many black keys would be on a 72 key piano?

There are 7 octaves on a standard grand piano (plus a minor third, or one additional "black key"). If each octave has 5 accidentals (or black keys) then 7 octaves would have 35 black keys, plus the additional B Flat at the bottom of the piano.....so: A 72 key piano has 36 black keys.

It might help. All of these photos I've put up. Have the black keys too, but you can ignore them, or take them out. Some of these pictures are zoomed out. So, if they seem small. Just keep your mouse on them, and then you'll see a square at the bottom right corner. Click that. It will zoom in for. http://www.balaams-ass.com/piano/octave01.jpg http://img.quamut.com/chart/651/11_grand_staff_piano.jpg http:/www.bestpianolessons.com/piano-images/piano-keys/piano-keys.jpg I know I'm not an expert But i hope this helps, or gives you any idea. :)
