There are over 7 million active Jehovah's Witnesses in about 236 countries around the earth in over 400 languages. That number reflects only those who are actively engaged in the door-to-door ministry that we are well known for. This does not count those who have become inactive, nor unbaptised children of JW's who are not approved by the congregation to engage in the minstry, nor does it count those who are interested but are simply meeting attenders.

There are no reliable figures publicly available on the number of former Jehovah's Witnesses. Some guide to the extent of the figures can be gained from the following statistics:

* Recent figures show an annual average of about 40,000 disfellowed members worldwide, although disfellowship does not necessarily mean permanent exclusion. * Beckford (1975) found that around one third of second generation Witnesses over 16 failed to maintain membership.

Our 2009 annual report gives a figure of approximately 7.5 million active preachers. However, this would not include those who are baptized but do not submit a report of their time spent in monthly preaching.
