1 kilobit can be either 1000 or 1024 bits. Instead of kilo meaning 1000, as is common in physics, this number is often rounded to 1024 (which is a power of 2).

Note that units like kilobits or megabits are not often used in computer science; rather, kilobytes and megabytes are used. (Reminder: 1 byte = 8 bits, usually.) The major exception is in data communication, where the bandwidth - the amount of data transferred per second, popularly known as the "speed" - is measured in kilobits per second or megabits per second. In this context, however, kilo means exactly 1000, not 1024.
