1. Eucalyptus leaves are tough, toxic and low in nutrition, but the koala has developed a stomach which is capable of removing the toxins from where they are filtered out by the liver. The caecum completes the process by changing the eucalyptus leaves into digestible nutrients. The caecum is similar to the human appendix. 2. A Koala has five toes on each foot. The front feet have two opposable toes, and the back feet have a clawless opposable first toe, and a fused second and third toe. 3. The Koala has a backward facing pouch.
Koalas have a thick fur coat which helps keep the koala warm when it is cold, the fur grows close together to keep the skin dry. Their tails are short and stumpy so that when the Koalas are resting or climbing branches it doesn't get in the way. On the front paw the Koala has 2 thumbs and 3 fingers. This helps them grip branches. On the back paw the toes are spread far enough apart so that it can wrap around boughs. There is also padding on the bottom of each paw to stop the Koala from slipping down the tree. Only female koalas have pouches and it opens at the rear. A special muscle on the Koalas belly controls the opening. This is great when the female has her baby the baby will be placed in her pouch and the baby Koala will be safe and won't fall out.
Koalas have several unique body parts to enable them to live in their habitat.
Koalas live in eucalyptus trees and eat only a few types of gum leaves from which they get all nutrients and water requirements. Eucalyptus leaves are tough, toxic and low in nutrition, but the koala has developed a stomach which is capable of removing the toxins from where they are filtered out by the liver. The caecum, which is extra long, completes the process by changing the eucalyptus leaves into digestible nutrients.
Koalas have a very distinctive black, oval nose which is equipped with super-sensitive nerves for detecting scent. The newborn joey is able to smell the mother's milk, which guides it to the pouch immediately after birth.
Koalas have very strong claws suitable for gripping trees and climbing. Between their first and second "fingers" is a large gap, which enables them to also grip tree branches comfortably, whilst their hind legs have one toe set at a wide angle. They also have toes with thick pads which enable them to sit comfortably in a tree all day. Their backside has extra padding also, which helps them to wedge comfortably in the forks between branches.
As with all marsupials, the koala has a pouch, where the joey stays after birth for up to ten months. When the joey leaves the pouch, it stays for several more months on the back of their mother. The pouch opens backwards. After about 30 weeks, the mother produces a substance called pap. This substance is actually a specialised form of the mother's droppings which, having passed through her digestive system, give the joey the enzymes it needs to be able to start digesting the tough gum leaves, making an easier transition for the baby koala to start eating eucalyptus leaves.
