Obviously this is a matter of opinion, but I think Patrick Ness's 'Knife of Never Letting Go' is up there with the best of them, as is Philip Pullman's 'His Dark Materials' trilogy. For younger kids 'Where the Wild Things Are' by Maurice Sendak and 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' by Eric Carle have to be contenders.
