The are 5 distinct branches of the United States Military. In order of precedence for ceremonial purposes, these are:

Each of these branches also include active duty, as well as, reservists.
Also, The National Guard and Air National Guard can be mobilized in times of war and during emergency situations in their respective states.

The only branch of the military that has no combat positions, is the Coast Guard. That leaves the Army, Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps. However, this does not mean that the Coast Gaurd never sees combat. During war, the Coast Gaurd is transferred to the authority of the Secretary of Defense. During war the Coast Gaurd supports the Navy in operations in addition to its normal peace time duties. So, while in support of the Navy, Coast Gaurd ships could be fired upon.

The US Military has 5 branches during peace time, Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, and Coast Guard. When the United States declares war, the Coast Guard falls under Homeland Security. So currently there are 4, because of the War on Terror.
In the US, there are 3 branches of the Military- Army, Navy, Air Force. The US Marine Corps is a Department of the Navy. The US Coast Guard is part of the Department of Transportation, but in time of war may become part of the US Navy.
