When symptoms do occur, they typically appear as one or more blisters on or around the genitals, rectum or mouth. The blisters break and leave painful sores that may take two to four weeks to heal. Experiencing these symptoms is sometimes referred to as having an "outbreak." The first time someone has an outbreak they may also experience flu-like symptoms such as fever, body aches and swollen glands.

It is possible to have herpes but never give it to your partner. Using condoms, avoiding sex during and just before an outbreak, using antiviral medication, and time from the first outbreak all decrease the risk of transmission.
I depends. If it's the first one, it is usually the longest and most severe. After the initial outbreak they tend to become less severe. They usually last a few days in the acute phase and then several days or weeks until completely healed. Then it may be months before another outbreak. It depends a great deal on the health and strength of your immune system.
Herpes is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by the herpes simplex viruses type 1 (HSV-1) or type 2 (HSV-2). Most genital herpes is caused by HSV-2. Most individuals have no or only minimal signs or symptoms from HSV-1 or HSV-2 infection. When signs do occur, they typically appear as one or more blisters on or around the genitals or rectum. The blisters break, leaving tender ulcers (sores) that may take two to four weeks to heal the first time they occur. Typically, another outbreak can appear weeks or months after the first, but it almost always is less severe and shorter than the first outbreak. Although the infection can stay in the body indefinitely, the number of outbreaks tends to decrease over a period of years. ...THANKS TO http://www.cdc.gov/std/herpes/STDFact-herpes.htm#Whatis

There is no cure for herpes. However it can be controled. If you currently have an outbreak be sure to keep the wound clean, but do not overly irritate the area. The sore contain infection virus particle which can cause a secondary outbreak if they come in contact with broken skin or mucus membranes. There are overthe counter ointments such as abriva which may speed the healing process. You may also take an oral antiviral which will prevent second round infections. Some people take daily suppressive medicine such as valtrex to prevent out breaks, but it is not 100% effective. Personally I prefer not to do this and take antivirals only at the first twinge of an outbreak.
