You have to burn 3500 calories to lose 1lb. However, you will not lose 1lb of fat. Some of it will be muscle (depending on your diet and your workout).

My understanding is that you burn 50% fat and 50% muscle. Drinking a protein drink before AND after working out will reduce your muscle loss as protein provides the muscles with essential amino acids.

Whey protein mixed with milk provides two different types of protein and that's going to be your best bet. However, you have to factor the calories of the protein drink into your daily caloric intake, otherwise you'll just be doing damage. With 8oz of skim milk, a "light" protein drink will contain roughly 280 calories. Without the milk a "light" drink will contain roughly 200 calories. However, be careful what protein powders you buy, as some are very high in calories when compared to the protein you get out of them.

Swing by a GNC or Vitamin World and ask them to help you out. Tell them your goals, etc. I've found Vitamin World to be VERY helpful.
