there are 8 candles
The candles on the Menorah can be of any color.
There are only eight candles on the menorah; plus a ninth which is used to light the other candles.
It is hard to know exactly what the first candle holder would have looked like. Candles have been around for many centuries helping to light the way in the dark. One of the earlier candle holders is represented by menorah which has seven or sometimes nine holders for candles.
To light a menorah, start by placing the candles in the holders, with the taller "helper" candle (shamash) in the center. Light the shamash, then use it to light the other candles from left to right on the menorah each night of Hanukkah. Recite the blessings while lighting the candles.
The menorah of the Holy Temple had 7 oil lamps (Exodus ch.25). However the specialized Hanukkah menorah (Chanukiah) has 9 candles.
The candles (or oil) of the menorah are lit with the shamash (the helper candle), which is positioned on the menorah either slightly higher or lower than the other candles but not on the same level as them.
The candles are put into the Hanukkiah (Hanukkah-menorah) starting on the first evening) of Hanukkah. The candles are lit in the early evening after sunset or later.
Every day, we place the candles on the right side (so that the candle to the far left is lit only on the eighth night). The candles are lit from left to right, so that the newest candle is lit first. On the sixth night, the two holders on the left side of the menorah remain empty.
For the Hanukkah menorah (chanukiah), any kind of candle that will fit, provided they burn at least 1/2 hour after dusk.
They can be any color.
There are no traditional colors for Hanukkah candles. They can be anything.
The candles on the menorah symbolize the miracle of Hanukkah, where a small amount of oil lasted for eight days in the Jewish Temple.
