Originally books were not written for children. Sometimes children would like a book such as Oliver Twist or Swiss Family Robinson. John Newbery started publishing books for children. Then children's books were published but many were very boring and children didn't like reading. Then in 1957, Dr. Suess published Cat in the Hat in simple rhyming words.
There are many books to try. The most popular system for younger children being sold today is the leapster reading systems, which are for preschool aged children.
Reading to children definitely affects children's growth and development. Through books, children learn languages. They listen to the words and ultimately learn their vocabulary. Children also develop their imagination when looking through picture books and coming up with stories of their own. Books are essential for children's development. Therefore, it is important for parents to spend time reading to their children.
