There are 23 chromosomes in a human cell following meiosis. Meiosis is sometimes called "reduction division". The first division of meiosis (meiosis I) halves the chromosome number. In humans, there are 46 chromosomes in the mother cell when it begins meiosis I. More precisely, there are 23 pairs, one of each pair having been inherited from each parent. This number (46 in humans) is the diploid number for the species. After meiosis, each cell has the haploid number (23 in humans), i.e. one of each chromosome in the set.

If you mean mitosis, then I have an answer. After the cell has split, the new cell will have the exact same number of chromosomes as the one before did.

Example: We have 23 pairs (46 chromosomes). When replication must occur we must have the same number of chromosomes as we did before or it will not double correctly. The new cell then will have 23 pairs (46 chromosomes).

There are 2n number of cells found after mitotic cell division. In humans, the number of cells are 42... In humans, the number of chromosomes in cells after a mitotic division is 46.
