The Titanic can stay afloat if four of the watertight compartments were flooded. Unfortunately, five of those compartments were flooded, and the ocean water was spilling over each compartment, accelerating her sinking.
5 compartments, which was one too many. Titanic was designed to stay afloat with 4 compartments breached, but not 5
5 of them. Titanic was designed to stay afloat with 4 compartments breached, but one compartment too many was all it took for it to sink
Five.

RMS Titanic's first five compartments filled with water following a brush-by collision with an iceberg. The ship probably could have floated with as many as four compartments flooded, but with the loss of the fifth, the ship's head (or bow) was pulled down to a point where the rising water was able to spill over the tops of the following bulkheads one after the other, dooming the ship.
The Titanic possessed 15 bulkheads, which divided the ship into 16 watertight compartments. The Titanic was designed to still stay afloat even if 4 compartments were breached, but upon impact 5 of them were breached, and eventually they all flooded as the ship sank.
Titanic's master builder, Thomas Andrews, had taken courses in naval architecture and ensured that Titanic could stay afloat with up to four compartments flooded.
the 4 front compartments or any of 2 middle compartments.
the titanic was flooded because an iceberg struck the ship which filled the first 5 compartments when only 4 compartments can be filled in order for it to still stay afloat.

The titanic did not float because it was only able to float if 4 or less water compartments flooded instead more did and it was to much for the titanic to hold and sadly many people died.
There are SIXTEEN watertight compartments on the titanic
Five. It could stay afloat with the first four flooded, but the fifth one was her death sentence.
People thought the titanic was 'unsinkable' because the ship had a double bottomed hull that was divided into 16 presumably watertight compartments. Four of these could be flooded without endangering the liner's bouyancy, so the titanic was considered unsinkable. When the ship collided with the iceberg however, five of the compartments flooded, and the boat couldn't hold the weight of the flooded hull (body of the boat), and this made it heavier and more likely to sink.
five or six compartments :)
