The Titanic possessed 15 bulkheads, which divided the ship into 16 watertight compartments. The Titanic was designed to still stay afloat even if 4 compartments were breached, but upon impact 5 of them were breached, and eventually they all flooded as the ship sank.
it was divided into 16
6 watertight compartments
The Titanic can stay afloat if four of the watertight compartments were flooded. Unfortunately, five of those compartments were flooded, and the ocean water was spilling over each compartment, accelerating her sinking.
The titanic carried 20 lifeboats, enough for 1175 people. But, the titanic wa overloaded and carried over 2000 passengers on board! It also claimed that the titanic was 'unsinkable', with 16 water tight compartments. They said that it could stay afloat with 4 of these 16 compartments flooded! No consideration or planning had been given to emergency situations. It is also agrued that safety was sacrificed for entertainent. A swimming pool, sports deck, and elevators too up valuable space that could have been used for lifeboats and storage. They rushed the builiding of it, and Bruce Ismay, the managing director of the Titanic, thought that too many lifeboats ruining the appearance of the boat.
Five compartments were breached and even a few feet of a sixth.
5 compartments were ruptered by the iceberg, which is one more that the Titanic could stand
There were 16

It had 4
6 watertight compartments
People thought the titanic was 'unsinkable' because the ship had a double bottomed hull that was divided into 16 presumably watertight compartments. Four of these could be flooded without endangering the liner's bouyancy, so the titanic was considered unsinkable. When the ship collided with the iceberg however, five of the compartments flooded, and the boat couldn't hold the weight of the flooded hull (body of the boat), and this made it heavier and more likely to sink.

Titanic was fairly believed to be unsinkable because of many safety-features - which could have protected her under normal circumstances. These include watertight doors and a double-hull.

The Titanic was thought to be unsinkable because it boasted many luxuries largely unknown at the time, including a double hull, "watertight" compartments and fast engines. In addition, the sheer size of the ship was intimidating, which probably contributed to the assumption that it was unsinkable.
