Anne was in hiding with her mother, father, sister Margot, Mr., Mrs., and Peter Van Pels (Van Daan in the diary), and Fritz Pfeffer (Mr. Dussel in the diary). The story involves action, romance, and the everyday struggles of an average teen.

In the first year of publication in 1947 over 3,000,000 were sold and the number reached 30,000,000 in 10 years. Because the book has been reprinted in various formats and via numberous offset publishing techniques and sold in such, the number of books at this date of 2009 could have reached well over 100,000,000. Recycled books are selling again in peak amounts. These resales often do not add into the overall sales of this classic.
