The Doris Day Animal Foundation commissioned DC Comics to create and print 75,000 copies of Superman for the Animals. DC polybagged about 16,000 of those as a free bonus with a number of kid-friendly comics titles they released on January 12, 2000. DDAF distributed the remaining 59,000 copies over the next year or so to parents, teachers, scout leaders, and humane educators across the country.
