In 1957 there was no European Union. Instead, it was called the European Economic Community (which later transformed into the European Union). It had six founding members: Italy, France, Luxembourg, Belgium, the Netherlands, and West Germany. The United Kingdom was offered to be a founding member, but refused. Denmark, Ireland, and the UK later joined in 1973, Greece was added in 1981, and Spain and Portugal both joined in 1986. West and East Germany later reunified in 1990, three years before the EEC would be engulfed by the EU.

∙ 11y agoThere was no official European Union in 1950. Technically, the European Union wasn't established until 1993. However, the EU is basically the European Coal and Steel Community (later becoming the European Economic Community) grown up. The ECSC was established in 1952, so there were no members in 1950. However, 1950 was the year that the idea of a supranational union in Europe came into being. France wanted to intertwine its economy with Germany in order to make another war between the two nations impossible.

West Germany was one of the original founder members of the European Economic Community (EEC) when it was set up in 1957. It looks to me as if you're confusing West Germany and Austria! The country that joined in 1995 was Austria. During the Cold War Austria was pledged to strict neutrality and couldn't join the EU at the time.
