One person held the position for over thirty years before Tom Riddle asked Dumbledore for the position between 1960-1970. After he was denied, the position was cursed and from then on, the position was only held for one year. I would say it's likely that Riddle asked for the position between 1960-1962, as there were mentions of Dumbledore still being new to his position of Headmaster when Riddle asked.
