You have six months from the date of cheque to convert a cheque into cash. The date of the cheque is the date shown on the face of the cheque. After six months of time, the cheque becomes a "Stale cheque".
If you present the cheque to a paying bank within six month period you can collect the cash in following ways.
1. If the cheque's account is a account of paying bank: You can en cash the cheque on same day.
2. If the cheque's account is not a account of paying bank: Depending on the clearing speed of the banking system you may get money on same day/ tomorrow/ or day after tomorrow.

Usually the validity for instruments like Cheque is only 6 months from the date of issue. So assuming the cheque was issue on Dec 1st 2008 you can use it till May 31st 2009. Beyond that date if you deposit the cheque, the cheque issuing bank/person is not liable to pay the money.
A debit card (also known as a bank card or check card) is a plastic card which provides an alternative payment method to cash when making purchases. Functionally, it can be called an electronic check, as the funds are withdrawn directly from either the bank account (often referred to as a check card), or from the remaining balance on the card. In some cases, the cards are designed exclusively for use on the Internet, and so there is no physical card. The use of debit cards has become widespread in many countries and has overtaken the cheque, and in some instances cash transactions by volume. Like credit cards, debit cards are used widely for telephone and Internet purchases. Debit cards can also allow for instant withdrawal of cash, acting as the ATM card for withdrawing cash and as a cheque guarantee card. Merchants can also offer "cashback"/"cashout" facilities to customers, where a customer can withdraw cash along with their purchase.
Unless the cheque itself says otherwise, you should be able to cash it immediately.Even if it does have a later date on it, in the US, banks are not actually required by law not to cash "post-dated" cheques, though they generally do try not to. If you post-date a cheque, you should regard it as a polite reminder to the person you make the cheque out to not to cash/deposit it before then, not as an absolute barrier to them doing so.
so they can get used to it At many stores and you can cash them at the bank.

3 working days excluding Saturday/Sunday. If you pay a cheque in on monday it will clear on Thursday. If you pay in a cheque on Wednesday it will clear the following monday as the weekend does not count as a working day. There are many cheque exchange brokers, jewellers, pawnbrokers and second-hand stores that will cash your cheque on the day for a small fee (usually about 4 - 6 %). Make sure you have ID with you though.
