40 DAY MORNING AND EVENING
13
The Philistines collected for war against Israel at Socoh and then encamped in Ephes-dammim. As the battle lines of the Philistines and Saul's army faced each other across the valley, the gigantic warrior Goliath emerged from the Philistine camp and loudly challenged Israel to supply a man to fight him in single combat, the outcome to determine which army should become the servant of the other. Morning and evening, for 40 days, the army of Israel, in great fear, was subjected to these taunts. No Israelite soldier had the courage to accept the challenge. (1Sam. 17:1-11, 16) The young shepherd David, with God's spirit upon him, met Goliath's challenge.
In the Biblical story found in 1 Samuel 17, David a small boy kills a mighty giant of a warrior called Goliath. The army of Philistines prepared for battle against Israel and camped in the area between Socoh and Azekah. King Saul of Israel gathered his army and camped near the valley of Elah. For many days, Goliath, a giant among the Philistines challenged the Israelites to send out a champion to meet him in combat. David, a young shepherd boy, answered the challenge and went out to meet Goliath with a sling and a handful of stones. David defeats Goliath with a well-placed stone into Goliath's forehead. David cuts off Goliath's head with Goliath's own sword. The Philistines see their champion defeated and turn to run away. The Israelites chase down the Philistines killing many of them. Israel's army returns to plunder the deserted Philistine's camp.
In Israel it lasts seven days, and in the diaspora (out of Israel) it lasts eight days.
Bane. Bane had a venom but Goliath fought David as a giant. Goliath is weaker. Bane is smarter. Plus, Bane could wreck Goliath's armor. Goliath is even worse. If Goliath's armor is wrecked, then Bane could tear up his hair and knock Goliath out for 3 days. Bane is better. Goliath can try to cut his head off. But Bane could wreck Goliath's sword. Goliath is the coward.
Seven days in Israel, eight elsewhere.
In Israel, Shavuot is 1 day. In the diaspora, it is 2 days.
