How many days did Jesus lay dead in the tomb?

Jesus was crucified on the Friday and buried before sunset as the Sabbath, in Jewish Law, begins at sunset on the Friday, until sunset on the Saturday. He was in the tomb on the Saturday, but we are told that early on the Sunday morning (before it got light) the women who attended the tomb found it empty. By modern day reckoning, Jesus was in the tomb just two nights and one day, and even then only part of the second night. In actual hours he was in the tomb around 36 hours. However, the Jewish custom in those days was of reckoning even part of a day as a day. Therefore, Friday was the first day, Saturday was the second and Sunday (even only the first few hours) was regarded as the third day. hence Jesus' claim that 'on the Third Day I shall rise again', or 'I will destroy this Temple and in three days rebuild it'.

"three days and three nights" is an expression of the disciples' culture, rather than scientific exactness. Matthew 12:40. The "sign" that Jesus gave was not the length of time that he would be in the tomb, but it was the fact that he would die, be buried and be raised to life.

This is significant because the Jewish religion believes that the soul of someone deceased lingers around the body for about 2 days before actually departing. For the Jews, a "day" was not a 24-hour period beginning at midnight: it was counted as two 12-hour periods extending from sunset to sunset. Also, any part of a day was spoken of the same as the entireday. The gospel accounts tell that Jesus yielded up His spirit at "the ninth hour" on the "day of preparation" (for the Sabbath), which would be 3pm Friday (Matthew 27:46-50, 62). There was a rush to place his body in the tomb before sunset that day, which marked the beginning of the Jewish Sabbath. (This is why the women went to the tomb to anoint His body at first light Sunday; there wasn't time to do so before He was entombed, and Mosaic law forbade the handling of a dead body on the Sabbath.) Even though His body was in the tomb for at most a few hours before the end of the day Friday, it was considered "the first day" of His burial. The Sabbath Day (6pm Friday to 6pm Saturday) was the "second day." According to all four gospel accounts, the empty tomb was discovered "Very early in the morning, on the first day of the week" (Mark 16:2), which had begun at 6pm Saturday. This was Sunday, the "third day" since Jesus' body had been placed in the tomb. Though He was not in the tomb for 72 hours (closer to 40 hours at the most), this time span, as reckoned by the Jews, agrees exactly with what Jesus had often prophesied.
