The upper city of Jericho occupied an area of about 6 acres. If the fortification rampart around the upper city is included, the total area of Jericho was about 9 acres, with a circumference of about ½ mile.

In the Book of Joshua (6:14), on each of the first six days, the Israelites walked around the walls of Jericho one time. However, it must be remembered that archaeologists tell us that the city of Jericho did not really exist at the relevant time. This is a biblical story, not a historical account.

AnswerOn each of the first six days, the Israelites walked around the walls of Jericho one time. They walked around the city seven times on the seventh day.

A:One of the most famous episodes in the biblical conquest of Canaan was the assault on the city of Jericho. In the Book of Joshua, the Israelites marched around the walls a total of 13 times. Joshua had his army go around the wall once each day for six days, then seven times on the seventh day, at which God caused the walls to collapse, allowing the Hebrews to storm the city. However, we now know from archaeologists that there had been no city at Jericho for many centuries before the arrival of the Hebrews. From a purely historical perspective, the Israelites did not really march around the walls of the long-abandoned city.

During the Late Bronze Age, the time attributed in the Book of Joshua to the conquest of Jericho, archaeologists say that there was no city of Jericho, and therefore no inhabitants. However, they say there is some evidence of a possible small, unwalled village on the site of the city at this stage; if so the population would have been quite small.
During the Israelite period, Jericho became a walled and gated city, as shown by 1 Kings 16:34, "In his [King Ahab] days did Hiel the Bethelite build Jericho: he laid the foundation thereof in Abiram his firstborn, and set up the gates thereof in his youngest son Segub, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake by Joshua the son of Nun." The population of a walled city was usually in the thousands.

The site of ancient Jericho is still visible today and has an area of ten acres. Its Canaanite population has been estimated (by Professor Kenyon) at up to 3,000. In addition, there may have been people who came for trade or other purposes, and there may have been temporary camps outside the walls. These people may have joined the Canaanite residents inside the walls as the Israelites approached.See also:

Was it possible to ride chariots around the top of the walls at Jericho?

A:At various times in its long history, Jericho had walls around it to protect the city from foreign invaders, and it might well have been possible to ride chariots around the top of the walls. However, the last wall before the Hebrew period collapsed during an earthquake in the sixteenth century BCE, after which the city was abandoned. As there was no wall at the time attributed to the biblical invasion, this would not have been possible.

What was the circumference of the city of Jericho in the book of Joshua?

Jericho is a city in the West Bank, and the estimated circumference of the city is about 4.5 kilometers (2.8 miles). The time it would take to walk around Jericho would depend on an individual's walking speed, but it would likely take around 1-1.5 hours at a leisurely pace.

Did the Israelite people march with the army around Jericho?

According to the Book of Joshua, all the men of war marched around the city walls. Against this, archaeologists say that there was no city of Jericho at this time. Scholars say that the story was probably an elaboration of a real siege that occurred much earlier against the city of Megiddo. In that siege, the king's army marched around the walls of Megiddo making as much noise as possible, day after day. When the defendants tired of following their attackers around the walls, the army suddenly attacked, breached the walls and entered the city unopposed.
