Martin Van Buren was the 8th US president. He was elected to the US presidency in 1836. He served in that position from 1837 to 1841. He lost his bid for a second term by losing to William Henry Harrison in the presidential election of 1840.Several significant events happened during his tenure as US president. In 1837, banks closed in Philadelphia and New York City, starting the Panic of 1837. The economic disaster was touched off by inflation and land speculation. In 1839, a boundary dispute between Maine and New Brunswick brought the US and Great Britain to the brink of war. In 1840, he urged Congress to establish an independent treasury to hold federal funds. This was an attempt to safeguard funds from private bank failures. It later was abolished in 1841 but reestablished again in 1846.

How many presidents were before Jimmy Carter?

hmmm... great question.... There have been 15 Presidents of the United States who were Democrats, although certainly few of the early ones would recognize some of the issues we deal with in our century. This count includes Grover Cleveland once although he was elected in two nonconsecutive terms. That would be the same for the 18 Republican Presidents the 4 Whig Presidents, the 4 Democratic-Republican Presidents, the one Federalist President (Adams) and the one Independent President (Washington.) In terms of days in office by any party someone has gone to the trouble of calculating that information: Republican Party: 32,182 days (88 years, 40 days) Democratic Party: 28,823 days (78 years, 334 days) (incumbent) Democratic-Republican Party: 10,227 days (28 years) Whig Party: 2,921 days (7 years, 364 days) Independent: 2,865 days (7 years, 308 days) Federalist Party: 1,460 days (3 years, 364 days) For the ultimate in day count add days from March 14th 2012 to the Democratic column.
