The amount of first-class postage is 42 cents anywhere in the U.S. How many stamps that is depends on the denomination of the stamps. If it's a 42-cent stamp, one will do.
For letters in the US, the number of stamps isn't important, nor is the distance; it costs the same to mail a letter across town as it does from one side of the country to the other.
What does matter is the weight. If the letter is an ounce or less, first-class postage is currently 47 cents, and you can do it with one 47 cent stamp or, if you can find them, 47 one cent stamps, or any other combination that totals at least 47 cents, the post office doesn't care. There is one exception to the 47 cent rule: if you have a Forever stamp (a stamp that, instead of a price, says "Forever" on it), it counts as whatever if the current first class rate for a one ounce letter is, regardless of what you paid for it when you bought it.
For things that aren't letters, or letters that weigh more than an ounce, it gets complicated (distance DOES matter then, sometimes) and the easiest thing to do is go to the post office, hand them the letter, say "I want to mail this", and they will weigh it, look at where you're shipping it to, and tell you how much it will cost.
A normal letter will take a normal 44 cent stamp. If there is several papers inside you might want to check with the post office before sending.
