In as soon as a few days to a few weeks an infected person MAY feel flu or cold like symptoms. Fatique, sore throat, headache and rash. Since these are nonspecific symptoms the only way to know for sure is to test for the HIV antibodies which will not be detectable during the "window period" which ranges from 2 weeks to 6 months but averages at 3 months after infection. Remember that there is a difference between HIV and AIDS. An HIV positive person is just that - they have the virus in their body. AIDS is the end stage of the HIV infection. Plainly HIV is the virus and AIDS is the disease caused by HIV. A few weeks after the virus enters the body, some people have flu-like symptoms such as fever, body ache, and headache which disappear after awhile. Remember that all HIV positive people do not experience these. Many people with HIV show no signs at all of infection until they develop AIDS. The only way to truly know is by getting tested and remember the "window period" mentioned above. It can take months to years to develop signs of infection and during these years people can remain asymptomatic. Abot half of the people who are HIV positive develop AIDS within ten years but this can vary immensely depending on treatment with drugs, etc. If you suspect that you have been exposed get tested...Even though this is scary it is much better to find out sooner than later for many more treatments are helpful earlier on and some can prolong full blown AIDS indefinately.

With the new tests in place since 2006, the HIV antibody tests are shown to be 100% conclusive at 8 weeks post exposure. Most sites state the 3 or 6 month window period, but this is no longer the case. If you have a neg test at 8 weeks it will not change period.

For some it is days (only 2 or 3); others months or years. There may be headaches, fever, nausea, and fatigue within days or weeks of infection. Many people associate these signs and symptoms with the flu.

What if my pregnancy test was negative but I have pregnancy symptoms?

Wait a few days and take another test. It's possible you got a false negative, or you just don't have enough of the pregnancy hormone in your urine to show up positive. The hormone doubles each day, so if you are still experiencing pregnancy symptoms in 5-10 days, take another test. If it's still negative and you are experiencing pregnancy symptoms, seek medical advice.
