Unless they have a valid reason to be absent they will be classed as truant if they are away from school.

Valid reasons include (but are not limited to):

Medical appointments (doctors, dentists, etc)

... erm... that's about the only one I can think of at the moment.

Truant

How can your sick child be marked as truant?

A child is generally labeled truant if they miss a certain number of days without excuses. Typically, an illness does excuse an absence, and truancy is based on the number of unexcused absences. If your child is chronically ill, its understandable that you may not be notifying the school each day that he/she will miss. If your child is sick enough that they are missing enough school to be considered truant, you should make an appointment to speak with the schools administrators right away. You can talk to them about the illness that is plaguing your child, the amount of time your child can realistically be expected to attend school/work on school work, and a plan for how to keep your child up to date with his/her peers. If the child is chronically hospitalized, you should also speak with hospital staff about alternative education programs. If you are simply allowing your child to stay home sick too much, and not taking the proper route to have the absence excused, you need to consider the long term effect that this is having on your child, and adjust your parenting accordingly.

Does the parent of a 17 year old face truancy charges in Texas?

How many absences in high school can you have before being truant in Wisconsin?

We seem to have different definitions of "truancy." It means "absent without permission," so, by definition, I would say the answer to your question is "zero." The first unexcused absence is a truancy. Wisconsin law seems to agree with me, defining a "truant" as a student who misses all or part of a school day without an acceptable excuse.Wisconsin law does have a special term for students who are absent without excuse for all or part of five school days during a semester: "habitual truant."Wisconsin allows a parent to excuse a child from school for basically any reason provided that advance notice of this is provided to the school. However, such excused absences are limited to ten days per school year. That might be what you're thinking of.(Note that this does not necessarily include days missed due to bona fide illness as determined by a physician, the ten day limit is for "I'm taking Junior out of school to visit Disneyland" type things.)

What are Illinois truancy laws?

Students in the state of Illinois must attend school, private, public, or adequate home school) if they are between the ages of 7 and 17. Some exemptions exist to this and they include, but are not limited to a child who is not physically or mentally able to attend, has already met requirements for graduation, is legally and necessarily employed, a child between the ages of 12 and 14 who are attending confirmation classes, any child who is absent due to their religion forbidding secular activity on a particular day or time. A 'truant' is defined as 'a child subject to compulsory school attendance and who is absent without valid cause from such attendance for a school day or portion thereof.' If a child is deemed truant and notices are not replied to and the problem not fixed, the child (if able) shall be sentenced to 20-40 hours of community service. If the truancy persists, a complaint will be filed with the state's attorney or county's circuit court.

What is Kentucky state law 159.150 say?

It's Kentucky's legal definition of a habitual truant. To summarize: (a) a child over six years old is absent or tardy from school for three or more days without a valid excuse for said absence. (b) any student who has been reported as a truant two or more times is considered a habitual truant (c) attendance an absences are cumulative for the entire school year (d) local school boards may adopt reasonable policies that require students to comply with attendance laws, that require truants to make up unexcused absences, and that impose penalties for noncompliance. Does any state fine parents if their child drop-outs before legal age?

Very unlikely. If a child is a chronic truant they might be interviewed by DCFS to determine if they are 'neglecting' the juveniles 'needs.' But any fine is unlikely unless they are violating come court order to keep the child in school.
