As it was found in an intact Tomb, the only one, in the Valley of Kings and could be put in its contexts it became all the more valuable. Almost nothing had been known about Tutankhamun till the discovery by Howard Carter, which made King Tut, the boy king, the best known Pharaoh of Ancient Egypt, though in reality he was only of minor importance. He acquired immortality in a way he could never have imagined.
The masks that were used as Egyptian "death masks" were usually made of gold and they had the purpose of was to give a dead face to the afterlife. The other masks were funerary masks. These were often made of wood and were made in to separate pieces.

King Tutankhamun became pharaoh of Egypt at the age of 9 or 10 after the death of his father, Akhenaten. He was able to rule at such a young age as he had advisers and regents assisting him in governing the kingdom. King Tutankhamun's reign was relatively short, however, as he died at the age of 18.
King Tut's mask was made around the time of the Ancient Egytians. You can tell because he was an Egytian pharaoh (king).
