I don't think we have a system that can track a very accurate total figure.
It is widely accepted that 9.6 million animals are euthanized annually in the United States.
National euthanasia statistics are difficult to pinpoint because animal care and control agencies are not uniformly required to keep statistics on the number of animals taken in, adopted, euthanized, or reclaimed. While many shelters know the value of keeping statistics, no national reporting structure exists to make compiling national statistics on these figures possible.
However, American Humane is one of the founding members of the National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy.
Using the National Council's numbers from 1997 and estimating the number of operating shelters in the United States to be 3,500 (the exact number of animal shelters operating in the United States does not exist), here are the statistics:
* Of the 1,000 shelters that replied to the National Council's survey, 4.3 million animals were handled.
* In 1997 roughly 64% of the total number of animals that entered shelters were euthanized -- approximately 2.7 million animals in just these 1,000 shelters. These animals may have been put down due to overcrowding, but may have been sick, aggressive, injured, or suffered something else.
* 56% of dogs and 71% of cats that enter animal shelters are euthanized. More cats are euthanized than dogs because they are more likely to enter a shelter without any owner identification.
* Only 15% of dogs and 2% of cats that enter animal shelters are reunited with their owners.
* 25% of dogs and 24% of cats that enter animal shelters are adopted.
It is from these numbers that we estimated what is occurring nationwide. It is widely accepted that 9.6 million animals are euthanized annually in the United States.
There are many dogs. Millions are put down each year because people dont adopt them and there time runs out. These dogs are so loving and sweet give them a second chance... they never did anything wrong...
Adopt love dont buy it
depends on the size of dog.
(is this a kids want a dog but I'm not sure question)
I'll give you my example.
Our dog is collie labrador cross he's a little bigger than a collie but more lean than a lab.
he eats Asda Hero tinned dog food (£4 for a 12 pack) 3/4 of a tin twice a day with a handful of bakers complete dry biscuits (£10.99 for 5 Kg it lasts maybe 3 weeks or so). plus leftovers and all the other junk the kids feed him.
so on food alone about 350 quid you also have to take into account vet bills (this could be nothing per year it could be hundreds. vets are not cheap so if anything happens to the dog its gonna cost you) , treats, toys etc
They are worth every single penny tho and I think every family if possible should have a dog as it teaches the kids a lot of responsibility.
it is not just about money tho as there is a lot of work involved in caring for a dog, he must be walked at the very least twice a day, even in the snow and rain. (and i don't just mean once round the block, he must be taken somewhere that you can let him off leash to run around)
he must be cleaned up after (including picking up his poo). depending on the breed there will be hairs that need cleaned up.
he must be properly trained (really not that hard as dogs are quick learners, always hungry and very intelligent. they will do anything for a treat.)
dogs have been instrumental in bringing up my kids to be the caring responsible young adults they are today.
There are thousands of dogs that end up in the dog pound each year. This is because they are unloved or unwanted by their original source.
Millions of dogs go to the pound each year. They are then given a brief period of time in which they can be adopted or are euthanized.
According to the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), an estimated 3.7 million sheltered animals were euthanized in 2008.
next time you are in a chineese resturaunt. count the "chicken" strips
A little over half of dogs in shelters are euthanized.
Too many.

Many different dogs are featured in Airbud movies, some of which are Aussies. Another movie is The Twelve Dogs Of Christmas in the dog napper's pound.
Dogs stay in the pound according to the company, they can stay for 2 weeks, 2 months, but it is super rare for them to like there for a year. If you see a harmless dog, you can take him/her from the pound and into a no-kill shelter. In conclusion the answer is: It depends on the pound.
You can buy a great, loving dog from the Milwaukee WI dog pound. There are a large variety of dogs you can choose from.

No, I have heard of 5 pound dogs breeding with labs before. It will be fine.
Well it depends. Most stray dogs go to the pound when they are caught and there is a certain number of days that the dogs have before they kill them. They do this so there is room for more dogs. A few of the stray dogs get picked up and adopted by the pound. Many people suggest if you want a dog or cat get them from an animal shelter. In answer to your question it depends on where you get them. if its from an animal shelter than yes many dogs get homes after they are strays. if your getting them from the pound probably not as many.

NO, this is really dangerous for the dog. Frontline for 40lb dogs is 4x as strong as Frontline for 10lb dogs, and the increased dosage is poisonous to the dog.
