People may decide to take drugs if they are hanging around with other drug users, but if a parent instils in their child the ability to say "no" and be different, then they are less likely to become drug users. Users often describe feeling empty inside, and needing drugs to fill that void that nothing else fills. However, there are other things that a person with this kind of addictive personality can choose to complete them. Some are positive (exercise, careers, etc) and others are negative (alcohol, drugs, sex, gambling, etc). It is down to the individual since there are many people out there who take drugs that come from perfectly happy family backgrounds, as well as those who come from divorced parents who never touch drugs. One last point - there are many who take drugs recreationally at some point in their lives, and never become addicts. So it is a minefield, but if you are the adult in a divorced relationship, I recommend you provide an atmosphere of honesty, trust and respect for self and others in the family in order to try and minimise risks.
