"Distance" means how far two object are from one another. In this case, how far the Moon is from Earth, or how far the Sun is from Earth.
When the moon blocks the sun from Earth's view, it is called a solar eclipse. This phenomenon occurs when the moon passes directly between the Earth and the sun, casting a shadow on Earth. Solar eclipses can be total, partial, or annular, depending on the alignment and distances of the moon, Earth, and sun.
It means that by coincidence the Moon looks the same size as the Sun in the sky - so we get to see total eclipses of the Sun, when the Moon fits exactly in front of the Sun and blocks its light out for a few minutes.
The earth's diameter is 3.67 times the moon's, and 0.0092 of the sun's diameter. The distance to the sun is 391 times the distance to the moon. The moon's diameter is 0.283 of the earth's, and 0.0025 of the sun's. The distance to the earth is 0.0026 times the distance to the sun. The sun's diameter is 109 times the earth's, and 400 times the moon's diameter. On the average over a month, the earth and moon are at equal distances from the sun.
The Moon does not orbit the Sun. It orbits the Earth.
The moon can block the sun despite being much smaller because it is much closer to Earth. During a solar eclipse, the moon passes directly between the Earth and the sun, casting a shadow on Earth. The alignment of the sun, moon, and Earth allows the moon to cover the sun's disk from certain vantage points on Earth, creating the effect of the sun being blocked. This phenomenon is a result of the relative sizes and distances of the celestial bodies involved.
sun earth and moon
The moon orbits the Earth. Venus and Mercury are the planets that are closer to the Sun than the Earth is.
Well the moon is smaller and closer, and the sun is larger and further away. We all know that the further away an object is the smaller it appears; it's just miraculous that the Earth, Moon and Sun are spaced apart at the perfect distances for the moon to appear almost exactly the same size as the sun.
