There were 22,289 recorded earthquakes in 2011 worldwide according to the USGS.

However, the USGS estimates that several million earthquakes occur in the world each year and go undetected because they hit remote areas or have very small magnitudes.

There were 31,419 recorded earthquakes in 2003 around the world according to the USGS.

Note many go undetected because they hit remote areas or have very small magnitudes so the actual number is much greater. In fact, the USGS estimates that several million earthquakes occur in the world each year.
