Usually one egg per day, very occasionally two, though in winter only one every few days is normal and sometimes they go off the lay for a couple of months.

How many eggs does a hen lay when she is sitting?

An individual hen will go"broody" and will gather a clutch of eggs to brood. These will not always be her own eggs. She will steal them from other hens by rolling them into the nest she has chosen. Unless the hen is broody she will lay her egg and leave the nest announcing loudly to the rest of the flock what she has accomplished. Hens can go broody whether there is a rooster in the flock or not, so no, not just fertile eggs trigger the brooding instinct.

How many baby chicks can be hatched at one time from one hen?

They can have from 1 chick to 15 chicks in a brood.A hen goes broody, which means she wants babies and will collect / sit on eggs. The eggs MUST be fertilized by the rooster to have baby chickens. The hen will sit on the eggs for average 21 days. During those days, the heat of her body heats the eggs, allowing the embryo to form. Right before hatching, the embryo will suck the yolk into it's belly, so that when it is born it doesn't have to eat for up to 2 days. The chick hatches, and the mother hen takes care of it.
