Each state gets electoral votes equal to the number of members of the House of Representatives from that state plus the number of Senators from that state. Currently there are 435 members of the house and 100 members of the senate and the District of Columbia gets 3 electoral votes. 435+100+3=538. In order to be elected President of the United States a candidate need a majority of the electoral votes so 538 divided by two is 269 and in order to get a majority he would need at least one vote over half or 270 votes.
