George W. Bush won the U. S. Presidential Election of 2000, beating Vice President Al Gore by 5 votes (271 to 266).

It took several weeks to determine the outcome of the election due to the closeness of the popular vote in Florida, a winner-take-all state with regard to electoral votes. With the other 50 sets of electoral votes counted, it was found that whoever won Florida won the election. When all the counting and recounting was over, Governor Bush had won Florida by 537 out of 5,963,110 votes cast.
