15 to 30 elephants in a herd
The memory of elephants is impecable, also scariest when provoked or threatened
You must be thinking of another president. All the sources I've researched say he had a herd of elephants given him by the King of Siam; Congress did not request that he donate them to a Zoo. He had a pair of Bald Eagles and a Newfoundland dog named Lara.

The elephant is fromtwo countries, AFRICA and ASIA. The different is that African elephants are a big larger and their skull is shaped somewhat different. Some people say African elephants ears are shaped like Africa, and Asian elephants ears are shaped like Asia.
Carthage was in modern day Tunisia and the most likely source of elephants was a sub-species of the African Bush elephant, the North African Elephant, from the Atlas mountains. This subspecies was smaller than modern elephants, standing about 8 feet high. Interestingly, when describing the now-extinct wild cattle, the Auruchs, Julius Caeser described them as ' a little below the elephant in size'. The Aurochs stood about 5'9" at the shoulder at most.

A group of elephants is called an Herd
Elephants are very social creatures. Both African and Asian elephants live in groups called herds. The herd is made up of cows or female elephants. Male or bull elephants leave their herd when 10-15 and join bachelor herds. The leader of a female elephant herd is called a matriarch. The matriarch is the oldest and most experienced elephant in the herd. The herd is usually made up of elephants they are related. If the herd becomes to big, the herd splits up, but stays close so the two herds can stay in touch.

Echo, an unforgettable elephant
An amazing thing about elephants is their sensitivity about death. When a elephant dies the herd has a funeral. They are silent like they were remembering the elephant. They pick about the bones and hold them. They will try to identify the elephant by looking at the skull. Elephants do not act like this around other dead animals. If a member of a herd starts to die the herd tries to bring it back to life by lifting it. Elephants also cry when a herd member dies. Later if the herd passes the same spot where a family member died the herd will stand still and be silent. These animals are truly human.
Herds of elephants are usually made up of about 10 to 20 elephants, but sometimes several herds join together and form a "super herd" which can have up to 100 elephants!
Yes, elephants have very established social order. Each herd has a matriarch, and consist of adult females, and young males and females. The mother, sisters, aunts, and female cousins will raise the young elephants. They will show them where routes to water are, where to find food, specific behaviors, and other things the young elephants need to know. They pass down traditions, sometimes that are specific to their herd. As elephants get older, the females usually stay in the herd. Males will leave at about four years of age. They will go out on their own, or sometimes join smaller all male herds. Sometimes, if a younger elephant is separated from the herd, another herd will take them in. A female elephant will adopt him in, and other females will act as the aunts or relatives that help to raise and teach it.
A group of elephants is called a herd. There is no name given for a line of elephants. Elephants do travel in a line led by the elder female. The calves will hold their mothers tail for protection.
Generally, a male elephant weighs more then a female elephant. A fully grown bull elephant will stand out in a herd because of his heavier weight and larger size.
