Floods will happen anywhere in the UK after prolonged rain - or a burst water main! However, serious flooding with loss of life and significant damage to infrastructure is much rarer, and the Lake District where a policeman was killed when a bridge over the River Derwent collapsed was the only major one in 2009, although melting snow in February caused localised problems ll over the country.
