These days it can be almost anything. '
Really cheap ones might still have 3x6(kinda-sorta 18 gears) or 3x7 (kinda-sorta 21). 3x8 would have been common several years ago.
3x9 was common quite recently.
A mid/high priced one today would most likely be 2x10, although 3x10 is within easy reach. And a race-prepped bike can be 1x10.
Depends entirely on the make and model. Mountain bikes can have anything between single-speed and 3x9 (=27 speed) straight off the sales floor. Even 30 (3x10) would be possible. A custom build could have 40 (4x10) or even more.
Keep in mind that the number of speeds (3x9) isn't the same as the number of usefully different gears. Generally you have about 2/3 as many usefully different gears as you have available different combinations.
That'd depend on what you think of as a standard bike. I'd say that the majority of bikes sold today have several gears, but in my interpretation of a "standard" bike it'd be one with only one gear.
Those having gears are most often 10 speeds.
"True" BMXes are single-speed bikes. Gears don't hold up well to being thrown around as may BMX bikes are. For racing, they're not even allowed.
