That's all down to how much custom work you're willing to put into it. You can get 33 different combinations with stuff that's just bolt-on(which doesn't mean that you have 33 meaningfully different gear ratios, some will be repeat values), after that, the sky is the limit.

A modest amount of custom work will get you an internally geared 2-speed crank.

Or you can go for a DualDrive rear hub, with 27 gears just there, then add a quad crank on a 2-speed bottom bracket for a whopping 216 different combinations.(with a lot of repeats)

Then there's also the NuVinci infinitely adjustabe bicycle gear box, giving you an endless number of gears (although not an endless ratio).
That'd all depend on how much effort/money you're willing to put into it. The most you can get straight off the shop floor( or close to it) is 33, although this only mean that you've got 33 different combos(3x11), not that you have 33 usefully different ratios. Add a mountain tamer quad to the cranks and you'll have 44. Use a schlumpf crank instead and you'll have 66. Go crazy and build up a custom wheel round a SRAM dualdrive hub and you'll have 99. Add a schlumpf crank and you're up to 198. Throw it all together and you'll have 8x33 (264)gears, most of them repeat ratios. Then there's a continuously variable gear in the works which'd theoretically give you an endless number of gears.

Can you explain how bicycle gears work and how they affect the performance of a bicycle?

Bicycle gears work by changing the ratio of rotations between the pedals and the wheels. Lower gears make it easier to pedal uphill, while higher gears allow for faster speeds on flat terrain. Gears affect a bicycle's performance by providing the rider with the ability to adjust their effort and speed based on the terrain and conditions.

What is the best bicycle gear removal tool to use for efficiently and effectively removing gears from a bicycle?

The best bicycle gear removal tool for efficiently and effectively removing gears from a bicycle is a cassette lockring tool. This tool is specifically designed to securely grip the lockring on the cassette, allowing you to easily loosen and remove the gears.

How can I improve my understanding of bicycle gears?

To improve your understanding of bicycle gears, you can start by learning about the different gear ratios and how they affect your speed and effort when riding. Practice shifting gears while riding to get a feel for how it impacts your pedaling. Additionally, consider reading articles or watching videos that explain the mechanics of bicycle gears in more detail.

What are the different types of electric bicycle gears available on the market?

There are three main types of electric bicycle gears available on the market: hub gears, derailleur gears, and continuously variable transmission (CVT) gears. Hub gears are enclosed within the rear hub of the wheel, derailleur gears use a system of sprockets and a chain to change gears, and CVT gears offer a smooth and seamless transition between gear ratios.

Can you explain how the cycle gears work in a bicycle?

In a bicycle, the cycle gears work by using different sized gears to change the ratio of how fast the pedals turn compared to the wheels. This allows the rider to adjust the effort needed to pedal and the speed at which the bike moves.
