In colonial US people traveled very far sometimes get to a locale where elections were held. People did not travel on the Sabboth. Therefore, travel began on Monday morning and sometimes took all day. Elections were therefore held on Tuesday, beginning early, so voters had time to travel home, because Wednesdays were market days.
