Ghost towns started out as regular towns. They are mostly in or near California because of the gold rush. When people started to decline in the gold found, they moved back east.
Most ghost towns can be found along the entire length, on or near almost any interstate or highway. The most popular and oldest road to find many of these ghost towns will take you from California to New York, it's called the old Route 66.
