The gram and the kilogram are measurement units for mass.

One kilogram (as the prefix kilo says) is composed by 1000 grams. Thus 17 kg are composed by 17000 gs.

It is to observe that, while the terminology could suggest the contrary, in the International Unit System (IS) the fundamental unit of measure for mass is the kilogram, thus the gram has to be intended as a fractional unit.

In some occasion, the kilogram is used as a measure of a force, not of a mass. This derives from the habit of using the force as fundamental unit derived by the old technical system of units. Rigorously the force kilogram and the force gram should be indicated with a different symbol with respect of the mass kilogram and gram as it is defined in the SI (for example as KgF and gF), but it is very rare in practice, frequently adding confusion.

A kgF (a gF) is by definition the force exerted on a mass of one kg (or one g) by the average gravity on the earth surface. Assuming the value 9.822 m/s2 for the average gravity acceleration on the earth surface and remembering that the unit of measure of the force in the IS is the Newton (N) we have

1 kgF = 9.822 N

1 gF = 0.00988 N

thus still being 1 kgF = 1000 gF.

One kg = 1000 grams. So one gram is 10^-3 kilograms. One mili gram is 10^-3 gram = 10^-6 kg. Kilograms and grams are both the metric units of mass. So the answer in kg is 0.0017
